Lanzarote; earth, air, fire and water

Lanzarote is an island within the heart of the Atlantic Ocean whose people have created a privileged home of lava and ashes.

According to the legend the Canarian Archipelago is none other but the remains of the accident and sublime civilisation that dwelt on a continent where the highest and most generous expresions of nature and humanity flourished: The atlantish.

Lanzarote, this suggestive painting made of fire and salt, supports this belief.

Situated on the most northern latitude, surrounded by a kind ocean tamely gamboling on its beaches and crowned by volcanic peaks, the Island ofers a survey of ochre tones and genuine intensities, capable of seducing the most indifferent observer.

Every day the everlasting spring blesses the skies of Lanzarote with hues of blue, and its nights are tinted by the clear light of a radiant moon.

Sands stretches, dunes and marinas dot the coast line in white, gold and jet black. Places to rest under the kindness of a splendid sun, caught up in the rhytmic transformation of life on the Fortunate Island.

General surf information for Lanzarote

Only the waves of the mithical Hawaiian Islands can be compared to those of Lanzarote, enjoying a high-standing among surfers from all over the world.

Getting there:
Lanzarote's airport is Arrecife (ACE) and is located in the south East of the island next to the major tourist towns of Puerto del Carmen. Taking a boat from neighboring island Fuerteventura is also possible

Travel:
Roads are good quality, no toll roads. It's one of the cheapest places in the world to rent a car. Expect to pay around 130 Euro's per week for a small budget car with Roofracks

Language:
Spanish, but english is spoken widely since it's a major tourist destination for the Europe.

Season:
Anytime is a good time for surfing on Lanzarote. If you prefer big wave surfing then go during the winter months, where all you need to wear is a shorty or maybe a 3/2. If you go during the summer months when the waves are smaller then all you have to wear is boardshorts and a rash vest

Cost of living:
Even though it's called Europe's Hawaii because of it's quality surf, it doesn't share the same cost of living than any of the Hawaiian islands. Rental cars are cheap on Lanzarote, and accomodation can be found cheap as well.  A good meal will set you back around 10 Euro's, a beer 2.

Boards

Since Lanzarote has a large variety of breaks, from beach to serious big wave spots, it's best to bring 2 boards, a normal performance short boards and a mini gun for the big wave spots. Board snapping is very common here and there are several surf shops in La Santa (Sefon) and Famara (San Juan surf shop)

Positive

-Great european surf spots for winter time
-Powerfull waves
-Variety ( left / right, beach / point, small / big waves)
-Safe

Negative:

The good thing about surfing in Lanzarote is that it's very easy to reach a wide variety of surf spots in a short time, going from 1 side of the island to the other will only take you 45 minutes. Remeber to always respect the locals here, since they are very good surfers. When it looks like an easy surf, it not nescisarilly is: the locals can make it look easy! Needless to say: Never drop in or get in the way of the local rippers

The best sports are on the North coast although it is advisable to be company of experienced surfers who are familiar with the sports, so that they may be fully enjoyed.
